Repairing storm damage to the air conditioner

What to Do When Your Air Conditioner is Running But Not Spreading Cool Air

by Ivan Prescott

An air conditioner is very important, as it keeps the temperature in your home at a comfortable level. To do this, it requires a lot of energy. It's important to make sure that it does the amount of work that makes up for the energy being used up. If your air conditioner is running at full speed, but still doesn't seem to be spreading cool air very well, there are some things you can do about it. Even if you are a novice at handling electrical equipment, there are still some air conditioning repairs you can perform on your own. The very least you can do is to troubleshoot it on your own.

Filter

The first thing you need to make sure of is that the filter is clean and whole. Remember to turn off the power to the unit before you open it and take a look at the filter. Sometimes it's enough to just clean it off dust and dirt, but sometimes you might need to replace it entirely. You should be changing your filter regularly anyway, even if the unit is not malfunctioning, to get the most out of your air conditioner.

Condensate drain

Examine the condensate drain. As air conditioners remove moisture from the air, they can produce quite a lot of water that goes through this pipe. Mould or algae might have formed in the pipe and blocked it partially. This would cause the air conditioner not to operate properly even if it's technically working. This could also cause puddles of water around the condensate drain.

Compressor

Another piece in your air conditioner that might cause it to malfunction is the compressor. If you put the thermostat to a temperature below the temperature of the room, you should see the fan start spinning. You could investigate this by using a long, thin tool and try to reach the fan through the grille. If you can't make it turn, it's possible some sort of dirt has gotten into it and is blocking it. If it does turn, then the problem is electrical, and you should contact a professional.

Malfunctioning thermostat

The problem could also be in your thermostat. It might be failing with sending the proper signals through the cables and thus causing your air conditioner to malfunction. These types of errors are difficult to troubleshoot on your own, and you should contact an air conditioning repair service that can help you out with either replacing the thermostat or get you a new air conditioner.
